#1 - Let's Get Started...

Welcome to the KCLS Learning 2.0 – 27 Things blog!

Learning 2.0 is an online learning program to learn more about emerging technologies on the web that are changing the way people, society and libraries access information and communicate with each other.

Over the course of the next twelve weeks, this website will highlight “27 Things” with Discovery Exercises to help you become familiar with blogging, RSS news feeds, tagging, wikis, podcasting, online applications, and video and image hosting sites.

To familiarize yourself with this project, be sure to read the About This Program (FAQ) page. These FAQs should answer most of your questions about this program. And if you don't see your question answered just add it to the FAQ page as a blog comment.

We’ll also be including a short Podcast introduction with the first lesson of each week. These podcasts are conducted by the Learning 2.0 Team and will often include a few words from another KCLS colleague. We'll keep them short, 2 to 3 minutes typically, and we'll be curious to know if you find them helpful – feel free to comment about them on the blog you’ll be setting up next week.

The first podcast is below - David and Bruce Schauer welcome you to Learning 2.0. You'll need speakers or a headset on your computer to listen - just click on the play button to get started.

Click the Play button above
to hear this week's Podcast (1:50)

So fasten your seat belts, grab your mouse and get ready for a discovery adventure… and remember it's OK to play in the library and have fun!

Be sure to tune in every Monday, for the next "thing" or discovery item ... or better yet, subscribe to the RSS feed.

I have already been playing and am having loads of fun! Some frustration is involved as well, but I know I will get the answers to all my questions soon. Thanks for this opportunity. I would never have created a blog or gone to MySpace without this encouragement.

Fun, engaging start to the program! Looking forward to learning a lot!

Hey, what kind of mp3 players (brand/model) are being given as the completion rewards?

You asked about the usefulness in providing information in podcast format (with the "introduction to Learning 2.0" as an example.)

Since people have different learning styles, such that they prefer to watch/hear someone telling them something rather than merely reading instructions, the idea is sound.

Didn't work for me, though: Like (I expect) many of the target audience (KCLS employees) I prefer to read about something!

In response to thelibrarydude's question - the players will be USB MP3 players, most likely with 1 gig of storage space. We haven't selected the make and model yet - we're going to wait as long as possible in hopes of finding the best possible player for the funding we have available. And, yes, they *will* work with our downloadable ebooks...

I'm excited to get started. I think this is going to be a great program :)

I'm getting excited for these activities!

This first blog post has already caused a little bit of confusion, though, since you have to have a gmail or blogger account to post comments. Everyone wants to post about their excitement, but most do not have an account since we haven't yet gotten to those activities.

Once we make it through those first few “things”, we’ll be getting a lot more comments! :)

This is going to be radical!

This is indeed interesting. However, I think it is moving too slow. Let's make some of those other "things" available soon.

What a great training idea. This reminded me why I became a librarian. I can't wait to learn something new tomorrow.

I'm ready to start.
I'm sure I have much to learn, but the real question that is niggling at my mind is will I be able to be witty enough to play well with the others?

Friendly Neighborhood Librarian said...

This is fun. However, many of my co-workers say they have no time to do this. So will my doing this look like I don't have enough to do that I have time to do it?

Matthew A. Wells said...

I'm familiar with many things on the web, but I've never specifically had a blog before. Sounds like the whole experience is going to be a lot of fun though.

KAVA said...

It was confusing at first but thanks to advocate, Paula,I was able to log in to my blog. Having the advocates is a great idea. Now I'm having fun.

Julia Pequlia said...

I'm really looking forward to this, if only I can find the time to do it! I think that's going to be the biggest hurdle for most of us.

I have an MP3 player, but it won't play our Audio Books, which annoys me to no end. I can't wait to have one that does!

Some of you have asked about finding time to participate in Learning 2.0. We know this is going to be tricky at times, absolutely, but it'll happen if everyone works together. And, don't forget, your managers are all on board - talk to them if, after the first few weeks, you still aren't finding the time to fully participate.

This program will provide the impetus I've needed to finally get a blog after all these (2 or 3)years!

Podcast transcript #1 -- My co-worker, Jim, is deaf and wants to participate in this Learning 2.0 program. I have agreed to translate the Podcasts for him. Here is the transcript of Podcast #1:
PODCAST 1 – “WELCOME”

David: Hello and welcome to the Learning 2.0 program for King County Library System employees. The Learning 2.0 Program aims to show you and your colleagues 27 things. These are going to be new or newish Web tools and trends that are increasingly popular in libraries and also increasingly popular with our patrons. Through the course of the next few months we are going to be posting 2-3 units each week for you to complete at your own pace. We’ll be looking at Blogging … we’ll be looking at MySpace, YouTube Flickr and a number of other really fun and interesting topics.

The goals of Learning 2.0 are wonderfully simple. You should explore, play and have fun. Seriously, I mean it … that’s all. We’re not grading you, we’re not giving you quizzes and participation is completely voluntary. We just want to raise your awareness – everyone on staff’s awareness. That will be accomplishment enough.

I’m here with Bruce Shauer, our Associate Director for…. it’s Public Services … right Bruce?

Bruce: Correct.

David: Bruce wanted to say a couple of words about the importance of your participation in the Learning 2.0. Thanks Bruce.

Bruce: Thanks Laurel, thanks David ... and thanks to all of you for listening. We’re very excited about the Learning 2.0 Program. We’ll hope you have a lot of fun participating, and that this will prove very valuable to you in the future. And I just wanted to let you know that all of APT is going to participate as well and that we have our own Learning 2.0 advocate, Jennifer Wiseman.

David: Is this just because you want your MP3 Player, Bruce?

Bruce: Ah … I’d certainly like an MP3 Player, but more important than that, all of APT want to be as knowledgeable as the rest of our staff in the Learning 2.0 Program just so we can help and help the public.

David: Sounds good! Thanks Bruce, and thanks everyone for listening. We’ll have one podcast each week at the beginning of the week, introducing that week’s theme. This week’s theme is “Welcome” … so welcome and thank you for participating.

Hi,
The log isn't working for #1 and 2.

The one thing I was surprised not to see in the basic overview of blogging is where the word "blog" came from. I remember reading that it's a combination of the words web and log, hense "weblog" or "blog".
